These women, many of whom are supported by the Community Enterprises Development Organization (CEDO), are true food heroes whose efforts are transforming lives across Uganda. Over the year’s CEDO has grown to produce 250 metric tons of certified seed across 14 bean varieties becoming a key player in supporting farmers and promoting food security since evolving into a registered seed company in 2010.

Today, CEDO supports over 3,000 farmers, the majority of whom are women. These hardworking women contribute immensely to Uganda’s bean production, a critical crop for both nutrition and income generation. Through CEDO’s tailored technologies, the organization helps boost food security and reduce the time spent in production, making farming more efficient.
Furthermore, CEDO builds capacity by connecting farmers to markets and providing financial support through Village Saving and Loan Associations (VSLAs). With access to these resources, women farmers are able to increase their yields, improve food security in their communities, and provide for their families.

Food is the third most basic human need after air and water – everyone should have the right to adequate food. Human rights such as the right to food, life and liberty, work and education are recognised by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and two legally binding international covenants.” from the World Food Day website.
As we celebrate World Food Day 2024, let’s recognize the dedication of these women who are not only growing beans but also growing Uganda’s future. Their hard work and resilience in the fields are vital to ensuring the “Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future” for all Ugandans. They are truly the unsung heroes of our food systems.
